Cassandra Miller: for mira

Cassandra Miller’s solo violin piece ‘for mira’ was composed for me in 2012. The first performance was given on 9 July 2012 at La Sala Rossa in Montréal as part of the nu:nord project.

The music takes a short sample of Kurt Cobain’s singing voice and reveals facets of its quality and structure through repetition. When I first asked Cassandra what the piece was ‘about’, she replied, “This is a piece about your masculinity.”

We met visual artist Angela Guyton in Manchester in 2014, and played her the piece. This video, which was created throughout the spring of 2015, comes out of Angela’s own experience of the music, her mind’s eye, and her life lived.

No animals were harmed in the making of this video. The bird was found (already dead) and brought in by Angela’s dog, Millie. It was given a proper burial after filming and we thank it for its contribution to this video. We thank Millie, who contributed many objects to this project, as well as her dog-friend, Meko, who gave moral support.

We also thank Rodrigo Constanzo, who produced the sound recording and acted as ‘outside eye’ during filming, as well as Richard Craig, Célian Girost, and Maria Gkotzampougiouki whose assistance during shooting was invaluable.
